CHRONOLOGICAL HISTORY OF PORI
(Not complete. Yet.)




1558: - Pori was founded on 8 March by John, Duke of Finland, because Kokemäki and Ulvila were too far away from the sea.

1559: - Duke built a King's Manor (Kuninkaankartano) probably to the same spot where today is Central Church of Pori.

1560: - Duke planned to build a castle and he ordered stones to be carried all over from Satakunta Province to the place which was known as Castle Hill (Linnanmäki) for a long time since that. He revoked the plans when he started to have problems in the kingdom. He probably planned to build his castle next to King's Manor.

1564: - Duke and his brother King Erik XIV had quarrels. Porinians chose King Erik and because of this Erik gave Pori the City and Free Trade Rights.

1570's: - First fire in the town.

1573: - Kirjurinluoto was given to city notary as a bonus.

1584: - First Porinian vessel sailed to North Sea.



1600-1700: - Early in the 17th century Pori had a population approx. of 1000 and were third biggest town in Finland.
- Pori started to use Reposaari as the harbour for bigger ships.

1632: - Pori Brigade (Porin Rykmentti) was founded.

1640: - Fire destroyed Pori quite badly and some plans were to move the city nearer the sealine.

1640's: - New Town Square.



1700-1800: - Early in the 18th century Professor Israel Nesselius of Turku University suggested that Reposaari should be the Capital of Finland because of Marine activity.
- Yyteri Manor's main building built sometimes during this century.

1750's: - Pori had the biggest Merchant Fleet in Finland.
- Koivisto Manor's barn built (probably the oldest building survived in Pori).

1765: - Pori got the Foreign Trade Rights back.
- Reposaari Port founded.

1766: - Population: 1500.

1770's: - Koivisto Manor's Ox-barn built.

1796: - Church of Ahlainen built (architecht: S. Köykkä).



1800-1900: - Early in the 19th Century Reposaari was used more and more as the harbour rather than City Centre's port.

1801: - Fire on 10 June destroyed almost the whole town leaving 3000 without homes.

1809: - Old Cemetery (then it was new) established.

1811: - Fifth District built.

1838: - Reposaari Hotel building built.

1840: - Pori was the leading Shipbuilding town in Finland.

1841: - Old Town Hall (Raatihuone) was built (architecht: Carl Ludvig Engel).

1851: - Pori Match Factory (the first in Finland) was built.

1852: - 22 May: fire destroyed 75% of the town. Poorer Porinians moved to nowadays 6th District into so called "hole-apartments" built into the ground. Because of many fires mayor of Pori decided to rebuild the city centre making boulevards crossing the town (architecht: G. Th. Chiewitz).
- Population: 6325.

1850's: - Shipbuilding and Merchant Fleet faded away.

1856: - The oldest Sports Club in Finland was formed: Yacht Club BSF - Segelföreningen i Björneborg.

1857: - Hotel Otava was built (architecht: Carl Johan von Heideken).

1858: - Pori Art Museum building built (architecht: Carl Johan von Heideken).

1863: - Central Church of Pori was finished (architechts: Chiewitz and Carl Johan von Heideken).
- The second oldest Fire Brigade for Volunteers in Finland established to Pori.

1864: - Sixth District originally for workers and poor people.

1865: - Artist Akseli Gallen-Kallela born on 26 April.

1872: - The first Finnish language theatre began at Pori in Hotel Otava. Later theatre moved to Helsinki and it changed its name to Finnish National Theatre.

1873: - "Satakunta" daily newspaper formed (in 1917 changed its name to Satakunnan Kansa).

1874: - Reposaari District built for residents.

1876: - Reposaari Church built.

1877: - Reposaari was the biggest port in Finland. Björneborgs Tidning newspaper reported that on 20 June there were 160 ships at Reposaari Harbour.

1879: - Pori Lyceum was founded. This is the oldest school in Pori at the moment though there has been a school at the same block since 1640's.

1882: - Club-House (Finnish & Swedish Clubs) built (architecht: A. Wahlberg).

1884: - Pori Theatre building was finished (architecht: Johan Erik Stenberg).
- New Cemetery taken in use at Käppärä.

1885: - Poriginal Gallery building built (architecht: F.J. Lindström).

1888: - Satakunta Museum was formed by Finnish Society of Pori.

1891: - Kirjurinluoto Park (designed by A. Fr. Rydberg).

1892: - So called Seacaptain Heine's House (nowadays Congregation owns it) built (architecht: R. Björnberg).

1893: - Eighth District (architecht: F.J. Lindström).

1895: - Junnelius Palace was built which is nowadays the New Town Hall (architecht: August Krook).
- Pori-Tampere railway was built.
- Population: 12 279.
- City Hospital built (architecht: J.E. Stenberg).

1896: - Cafe Jazz building built (architecht: G. Nyström).

1899: - Pori Cotton Factory was built (architechts: August Krook & Sundell).
- Juselius Mausoleum was built. Frescos by Akseli Gallen-Kallela. It was built by F.A. Juselius in the memory of his daughter. Architecht: J. Stenbäck)



1901: - The first motorised crane in Finland erected to Mäntyluoto Harbour (Port of Pori).

1905: - The Great Strike in Finland.

1910: - Restaurant building to Kirjurinluoto Park built (architecht: A Fagerholm).

1912: - Cygnaeus School built (architecht: U. Nyström).

1914: - Steam Ship Norra Sverige hit the mine near Mäntyluoto Harbour (Port of Pori) on 7 December.
- The biggest fish (Sampi - Sturgeon) ever catched in Finland was 149 kg's and 248 cm and it was caught at Sunniemenranta.

1918: - Mäntyluoto Hotel built (architechts: Fagerholm & Nordman).

1925: - Torpedoboat S2 sank just outside Reposaari on 15 August. 23 people died at that accident. There's a monument (designed by Wäinö Aaltonen) for them at Reposaari Church.

1926: - Pori Bridge opened (architecht: Professor J. Castren).

1927: - Market Hall built (architecht: O.J.A. Viljanen).

1931: - Two theatre companies (Porin Näyttämö and Porin Työväen Teatteri) merged and Pori Theatre was formed.
- Akseli Gallen-Kallela died at Stockholm on 7 March.

1934: - Porin Pallo-Toverit were formed (soccer). Later they changed their name to FC Jazz (1991) and won the Finnish Championship twice (1993 & 1996) before a bankcruptcy in 2005.

1935: - New Railway Station opened (architecht: T. Hellström).
- Satakunta Central Hospital's first buildings built (architecht: J. Paatela).

1940: - Sundsvall (Sweden) became the 1. Twin City of Pori.

1941: - Many areas around Pori were united to the city of Pori and therefore made the city the fifth biggest town in Finland.

1952: - Sondeborg (Denmark) became the 2. Twin City.

1956: - Porsgrunn (Norway) became the 3. Twin City.
- Bridge to Reposaari finished.

1957: - Outdoor swimming centre at Isomäki opened.

1958: - Pori had their 400th birthday.
- "Chinese Wall", the longest housing complex (186 m) in Pori, completed.

1961: - Junnelius Palace became New Town Hall.
- First "The Day Of The Pori" (Porin Päivä) held

1963: - First fast food grill opened in Pori.
- Kaanaa watertower built.

1964: - Isomäki Ice-Rink was built.
- First parking meter's in Pori.

1965: - Porin Karhut won the Finnish Ice-Hockey Championship.
- Riga (Latvia) became the 4. Twin City.
- The Rolling Stones performed at Yyteri Beach on 25.6.
- Pori Stadium built.

1966: - First Pori Jazz Festivals.

1967: - Rosenlewin Urheilijat -38 won the Finnish Ice-Hockey Championship.
- Porin Karhut and Rosenlewin Urheilijat -38 merged to Porin Ässät.
- Bremerhaven (Germany) became the 5. Twin City.
- Porin Maalaiskunta (Pori Rural Commune) united to the city of Pori.
- First traffic lights in Pori in use (8th November).

1968: - Stralsund (Germany) became 6. Twin City.

1970: - Pori had over 75 000 inhabitants for the first time.

1971: - Isomäki Ice-Rink was covered as Isomäki Ice-Hockey Arena.
- Porin Ässät won the Finnish Ice-Hockey Championship.

1972: - Ahlainen united to the city of Pori.

1973: - Eger (Hungary) became 7. Twin City.
- Sampola District's first buildings built.

1974: - Linnansilta (Castle Bridge) opened.

1975: - Kolobrzeg (Poland) became 8. Twin City.
- Annual Housing Fair held at Pori.

1976: - The new City Library built.

1977: - The first and longest Promenade in Finland was opened.
- First Kebab-house in Finland opened (probably was 1977).

1978: - Porin Ässät won the Finnish Ice-Hockey Championship (SM-Liiga).
- Liberec (Czechoslovakia/Czech) was the 9. Twin City 1978-1996.

1979: - Pori Art Museum was founded.

1980: - Culture House Annankatu 6 founded by Pori Theatre Youths. Very famous cultural place for bands, actors and other artists.

1982: - Dingo formed (nationally maybe the most famous band in Finland).
- The fire of cotton factory (Porin Puuvilla).

1983: - First University activity in Pori.

1984: - The Youth House (Nuorisotalo) was opened.

1985: - Radio Pori (local radio) started.
- Dingo-hysteria (f.e. second album "Kerjäläisten valtakunta" sold 125 000 in a week).

1986: - Dingo broke up. They still going to make few comebacks in the future.

1987: - The deep harbour of Tahkoluoto opened.

1989: - Very different kind of shopping centre, BePOP, opened (architechts: Matti Nurmela, Kai Raimoranta & Jyrki Tasa). In the building there are f.e. round windows, colourful pillars and it show the imagination of architechts.

1990: - Macon (France) became 10. Twin City.

1991: - Porin Pallo-Toverit (PPT) changed its name to FC Jazz (soccer).
- Shopping Centre Isokarhu opened.

1992: - FC Jazz were third in Veikkausliiga.

1993: - FC Jazz won Finnish Football League Championship (Veikkausliiga).
- Northern Harbour-road (Pohjoinen satamatie) from Reposaari to Ahlainen opened.

1996: - FC Jazz won Finnish Football League Championship (Veikkausliiga).

1997: - Satakunta University of Applied Sciences had their permanent permission to operate.

1999: - Concert and Movie Centre Promenade was opened. Phil Collins had layed the first brick year earlier.
- First Culture Festival Pori Folk.
- Building of Wind Park started at Mäntyluoto and Reposaari. Pori is excellent place for Windmills because the average speed of wind is 7,2 m/s.



2001: - The University Consortium of Pori was established.

2002: - New Delta Arena was used by Pori Jazz.
- Orthodox church built.

2003: - The old match factory was demolished.

2004: - In the Municipal Elections SDP (Socialdemocratic party) got 32,4% of votes while Kokoomus (National Coalition Party) got 24,8% and Vasemmistoliitto (Left Wing Alliance) got 20,9%. These are the three biggest parties in Pori at the moment.
- Leo-Pekka Tähti won two gold medals at Paralympics in Athens.
- Aino-Maija Luukkonen became City Mayor.

2005: - FC Jazz vanished from the football scene because of financial problems.

2006: - Porin Ässät achieved silver medals at Finnish Ice-Hockey Championship (SM-Liiga).
- New Lukkarinsilta bridge built.

2008: - Pori and Noormarkku accepted the amalgamation of the municipalities. From the beginning of 2010 Pori will have approx. 82 600 inhabitants.

2010: - Noormarkku joins Pori.
