A SHORT HISTORY OF POPA Bror Weckström had an idea of forming a new team in Pori and in 16th April 1925 was a held the first meeting of PoPa at café at Pori Theatre. It was decided to form a team called Porin Palloilijat and to take football and bandy as their main focus. First board was: Erkki Laitinen, J. Kari, Bror Weckström, O. Huhtanen, A. Forsberg and H. Lingvist. In May 1925 they had the rules for the club ready. The team was registered on 13th May 1925. They also included ice-hockey, womens basketball and skating into the teams programme. First chairman was Erkki Laitinen and Veikko Laitinen was following his work later. PoPa played their first games at Liisantori and then later at Tiilimäki before 1929 they moved to Juhannuslehto football and ice-hockey field. After that they moved to Herralahti football ground. Nowadays PoPa plays at Pori Stadium after FC Jazz went to bankcruptcy. In 2006 all of PoPa were focusing on promotion to first division. We had Antti Sumiala, Lasse Karjalainen and many other excellent players but the midsummer sloppiness cost us the promotion place. |
